From Visitor to Donor: Giving Page Best Practices

Last updated: September 24, 2026

Turning a website visitor into a donor is one of the most important things your organization can do online. Below, we've pulled together our favorite best practices, plus a few questions to ask yourself, to help you build a smoother path to digital giving.

Button Placement

Self-Evaluation

Do you have a donate button in the top navigation bar of every page on your website?

Best Practices

  1. Donors should be able to reach your giving page from anywhere on your site in just one click!

  2. We recommend placing your donate button in a top navigation bar that stays visible on every page. This allows visitors to give the moment they feel inspired, without scrolling or searching.

Ways to Give

Self-Evaluation

Do your donors know they have more than one way to give to your organization?

Best Practices

Credit/debit cards are still the most common forms of digital giving, but offering multiple giving options lets donors choose the asset that best fits their financial situation, tax needs, and personal preference.

Quick Context

Self-Evaluation

How much do donors have to read before they understand which giving option is right for them?

Best Practices

  1. Most website visitors skim rather than read closely. Help donors understand each giving option in a short, clear sentence:

    • For Cash Givers: Highlight that Overflow offers low-fee credit/debit, ACH, and digital wallet giving.

    • For Stock and Crypto Givers: Emphasize the tax benefits of giving appreciated assets.

  2. Have more to say than fits cleanly on the page? Consider creating a separate landing page on your website or linking out to your FAQs.

Noncash Strategy

Design

Self-Evaluation

How do donors feel when they land on your giving page?

Best Practices

  1. Offering multiple ways to give means you have a lot to display, but that doesn't mean your website's Give page has to feel cluttered. (Real-life CTA examples can be found here!)

    • Keep the design simple by steering clear of busy graphics, fonts, and color schemes.

    • Make every call to action clear, compelling, and short.

  2. If you'd like your giving pages to better reflect your brand, we're happy to help! Reach out to our Onboarding or Support teams with the hex codes for your preferred background and button colors.

    • Note: The homepage background (white) can't be changed, but we can update the color of each individual asset tile to match your branding.

Beyond Your Website

Great giving experiences don't stop at your homepage. Here's how to carry these same best practices to other places donors find you:

Email

Keep your key content "above the fold," so supporters see it the moment they open your email. Most people check email on mobile, and it's easy to miss a donate button that's buried further down. 📧

Social Media

  1. Place a Donate or Learn More button at the top of your social media profiles. 📱

  2. We recommend using a landing page (such as Linktree or Zaap) which lets you link to multiple pages, including your giving page, from a single URL.
